High fidelity simulations and high performance computing

(30h, 3 ECTS) J.P. Laval

The first objective is to provide students with an overview of the possibilities with Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) in several flow configurations. As DNS are usually associated to very large simulations and high performance computing an introduction to parallelisation technics and languages such as MPI and OpenMP will also be offered. In a second part the aim is to provide a thorough knowledge about the theory of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The different families of subgrid scale models (turbulent viscosity, scale similarity, …) will be also presented and compared. The course will end with a personal practice in which the students perform and analyze a DNS of Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence.
