Flow control

(30h, 3 ECTS) L. Cordier

The objective of this course is to present the concepts and tools (mainly numerical) necessary to approach in a modern way the control of flows and heat transfers. First, we will introduce the optimal control methods by showing the diversity of problems that can be solved in this framework. We will then present the essential elements of the analysis and control of linear systems (LQR and LQG methods). We will approach the problem of dimensionality reduction to extract the essential information from a physical point of view in order to understand, predict and if possible control the phenomena of interest, from a kinematic point of view (extraction of modes according to different criteria) and from a dynamic point of view (construction of reduced order models allowing to reproduce the dynamics of the system). We introduce the concept of machine learning with the objective to show that many problems at the heart of our disciplinary issues can be addressed by generic approaches.
